Hi. I used to use this blog a lot more than i do now. I don't agree with much of what i've posted here, but such is the nature of time. :) My instagram & facebook are likely to be more up to date.

weird dj oppurtunity

>> Saturday, August 30, 2008

i just got contacted by a pal george for a great dj assignment. i'm to do 9-10 minutes of music for a fashion show by lialia for genart's 14th annual fresh faces of fashion show...

they are inspired by sophia loren, monica vitti (pictured), claudia cardinale, and anouk aimee, spanish/italian summer nightlife and fellini films of the 60s and 70s, all with a modern twist...

i'm on it.

any suggestions for tunes? i'm looking at you, frank...

UPDATE: it's done. i used ableton to mix it super-tight. (also because my new vestax pdx-3000s and traktor scratch aren't in yet...) i'm pretty happy with it, considering how tight the schedule was for this assignment. (basically 36 hours!)

the tracklist is as such:

nino rota - la dolce vita
trentemoller - vamp
junesex - a finger or two
matthew herbert - gang of boys
flanger - how long is the wrong way
bukkador & fishbeck - decade
metro area - miura
smith n hack - strength and inspiration
riz ortoliani - tiffany sequence m.8
riz ortoliani - una sull' altra
gino soccio - dancer
la lupe - fever (sinden remix)
pete rodriguez - i like it like that (aaron jerome remix)
gotan project - diferente
gritos de guerra - buleria

if you want to hear it, i may send you a link... ask. i want to wait until i work out the rights with the designers before i just post it. anyway, wish them luck... some people get hella famous from winning this show.

well, there are three ways you can go with this the way i see it.

1) try to find lists of movie soundtracks from the 60s and go the italian/pop route

2) italo disco

3) runway house

(if choosing the latter, i've always thought the jason nevins remix of tom novy's "superstar" http://www.discogs.com/release/225943 was the epitome of a runway track)

and of course you have to somehow work in robbie tronco's classic "walk for me"

if going the italo route, definitely work in dancer by gino soccio and some metro area

thanks... i'm thinking i'll do a little of all three. i already pulled some metro area (miura)... definitely going to look for the tracks you recommend.

i already had some sweet italian cinema musics... and some related library pulls from luke vibert... makes me think of kerrier district, too. runway house, huh? makes sense it exists.

runway house is just something i made up on the spot to describe that kind of music you hear at fashion shows. a little bit house, a little bit club, a little bit trance, a lot gay. i hadn't noticed that this was a new york show, btw, and i'm rethinking my initial assessment. since it's not in pittsburgh you might want to go with some stuff that's a little more now, "superstar" and "walk for me" might be a little tired for the big city.

whatever you do, i think your mixing and energy style should match the "mixing dirty" thing you did. find whatever is the current equivalent of that lily allen joint and you're most of the way there.

got money? feed kids!
