Hi. I used to use this blog a lot more than i do now. I don't agree with much of what i've posted here, but such is the nature of time. :) My instagram & facebook are likely to be more up to date.

great threads pt. 1

"i feel like i just kicked a hive of super-intelligent bees"

that's a quote from matt shadetek, who recently cause a lot of brilliant dialogue here (but mostly here) with his post "babel dancing in tongues" about cultural appropriation as potentially exploitative "tourism." i think overall the thread (particularly the dutty artz link) was really quite civil and thought-provoking. it sort of follows in the vein of "cotorro, sexo y mambo" on dutty artz and "rearguard opinion? (slackness b/w sexism & sexuality)" on wayne & wax .

also notable to me recently was the immense (1800+ comments!) debate over at boingboing.net following their removal of their posts mentioning violet blue.

also, don't miss "anarchism, mysticism & anemnesis" over at the absent narrative. so far the discussion is only me, laura and tait, but you can't beat the topic... the zines linked to (anemnesis 1 & 2) are worth the click on their own.

no he didn't!

this will be the only post to ever mention britney spears. directly lifted from the daily kos:

"With the McCain campaign forced to back off their blatant lies about troop visits, they're now going with the uppity line of attack. McCain's latest ad tries to put Barack Obama on par with Britney Spears and Paris Hilton ("Call me, Harold" anyone?) as just another celebrity. The Obama campaign responded by saying:

On a day when major news organizations across the country are taking Senator McCain to task for a steady stream of false, negative attacks, his campaign has launched yet another. Or, as some might say, ‘Oops! He did it again.’

"no he didn't!" or as some might say (apologies in advance), "oh, snap!"

phat mandee got robbed

by this douchebag. he took her "Saturn SL1 2002 lisence plate FRP3900 , the Macbook Pro, the harddrive, a Canon A 530 camera, our ipod and trust" his name was given as Jorge (or George) DeCastro Garcia, and he was a pilot with IFL. he said he wanted to go to burning man this year. she doesn't think he is dangerous, by the way, just a creep. mandee will be fine, she's insured. she mostly misses her photos. if you have any, send them to me or her.

phat mandee is the immensely talented songstress involved with pittsburgh's vocal jazz, vaudeville, bellydance and burner scenes, and a real (huge!) gem.

obama/ludacris ticket? (+nas!)

it's hilarious there is even any kind of debate about this. hilary clinton's finance chair yashar hedayat said "I hope Senator Obama has the presence of mind to denounce and distance himself from Ludacris." of course, he did, sort of, but in a really subtle way that also denounced ludacris's criticisms of jesse jackson, john mccain and president bush. obama's campaign quote here and song lyrics here. i think it's great, if stereotypically rude/gruff...

while we're on it, here's a video for nas's black president. it's a good tune, with balance. he questions whether obama will really care after he gets elected, something a lot of "progressives" graple with in their support of obama. nas got some very mainstream news coverage recently for his calling out fox "news" racist attacks on the obama family. he was even on the colbert report with over 600,000 signatures from colorofchange.org:

UPDATE: i uploaded the nas song here for an mp3 copy...

ricardo villalobos

>> Monday, July 28, 2008

djs are dorks. anyway, some of them are brilliant. like ricardo villalobos, pictured above on the far right along with lumenaries richie hawtin, sven vath (and some other guy...). a great minimal techno producer with chilean music and (gasp!) depeche mode influences. you got to hear it, though... totally original and wonderful. of all the tracks he's on that i've got (100+), these are my six faves.

(mp3)ricardo villalobos - "ichso"
from "acsho e.p." (2005)
(mp3)ricardo villalobos - "easy lee" from "alcachofa" (2003)
(mp3)ricardo villalobos - "what you say is more than i can say" from "alcachofa" (2003)

these next two are (long!) remixes of shackleton's breakthrough dubstep epic "blood on my hands", but they're deep as the mariana trench.

(mp3)shackleton - "blood on my hands (ricardo villalobos apocalypso mix pt.1)"
(mp3)shackleton - "blood on my hands (ricardo villalobos apocalypso mix pt.2)"

below is a jay haze remix of "easy lee" jay is a phenomenal dj, and though i don't like many of his produtions, this remix is intricate, complex and totally enjoyable.

(mp3)ricardo villalobos - "easy lee (jay haze crash the after party dub)"

synchronous breathing

do as one. from laura's post about it:

"it's a breathing synchronizer. you watch this soothing icon expand and contract as you breathe in synch with people all over the world (when i was using it, 193 people were logged on, with a map showing where they were located.) you can even choose to customize the display with a color, a meditation timer, and a few other widgets, or clear the screen so you're just looking at this thing.

there are a few other "rooms" available for different meditation exercises, but you have to donate in order to get access to them, which is particularly sketchy since they don't really say what the donations go to. still, you only have to donate a dollar for a month of access, so i might try it. and anyway, the free one is cool. of course you don't need something like this to meditate, but sometimes it helps. now if it just had a soothing cheesy soundtrack..."

i can provide the cheesy soundtrack... two of my favorite "chillout/downtempo" electronic tunes.

(mp3) irresistable force - "the lie-in king"
from it's tommorow already
(mp3) dj food - "minitoka" from kaleidoscope

breathing is a bridge to "god" (and health)

mari kimura and "impossible" overtones, guitarbot

>> Sunday, July 27, 2008

violinist mari kimura has found ways to play in cello range... on a violin! from this article... "she demonstrated her ability to top scientists in the US, but they gave up trying to find out how the effect happens." from this interview:

"DB: Interesting. Now, I tried the same thing the other day on my violin, and I could only get flattening down to a minor second below G. So it’s a matter of pressing down very hard?

MK: Well, it’s a very tricky thing. It’s not that hard. It’s more like you click into some kind of a mode. So there is a certain amount of pressure, and the location of the bow on the string has a lot to do with what interval you achieve."

samples and videos here. mari kimura's site here.

i saw the robot she's standing with at the pittsburgh children's museum recently. it made utterly beautiful sounds, and is a very simple, but well executed design. it's called guitarbot, and its' creators site is here. video of guitarbot with mari kimura here.

contrabass saxaphone?

>> Saturday, July 26, 2008

holy shit, they're huge! the contrabass is twice the size of a bari... watch:
also worth checking out this short video of a goofy guy playing one. james carter plays a mean bass sax (slightly smaller) here. there is a sax even lower, the subcontrabass sax... really though, if i was going to get a huge wind instrument it would have to be the contrabassoon, or be like this lady and have both.

argh!

if it wasn't for cute stories of a cat leading a blind dog like the one above (click for larger version), i would be very angry right now. i was just recording a killer new mix and the computer crashed. i blame native instruments and stanton for their collective abandonment of final scratch users. i'll never get a software update, and the software i'm using crashes my computer randomly. it's not wonderful, and i can't afford to buy records or and updated computer-based system. but i love djing, especially live, where this is really dangerous. c'est la vie!

anyway, i feel a bit like a punching bag, so here's a track by that name... killer chill out.

face to face

>> Wednesday, July 23, 2008

in 1999 i was an uncritical technoutopianist at carnegie mellon university. i had this idea for an internet networking site very similar to friendster or myspace, 3 and 4 years before either existed, respectively. i took the idea to my faculty in the "electronic and time-based art" department and received widespread support for the idea. my life would have been totally different if had pursued it.

then this hippy grad student photographer lady named cheryl casteen stopped me dead in my enthusiasm. "the most important work is face to face", she told me. not that my idea wasn't worthwhile or important, but just not to forget the importance of unmediated experience. she was adamant tht i absorb this idea. i'm not sure to this day if she is right or not, but i took it as such regardless. i was seized by the potential righteousness of her advice for me...

i scrapped the project, and my whole life exploded with goodness. that summer i was involved with the near-legendary automobile revision project, moved to vermont to build a music studio, experienced my first tastes of what true love meant, threw great parties (and one dud rave in new york city... can we say "learning experience?") and generally experienced awakening.

years later i was going through art supplies cheryl had left in pittsburgh with our mutual friend peter coffin and came across a wax of her face. ever since, i have gazed upon her face in my art space anc contemplated her wisdom... thanks, cheryl.

tambour battant

>> Tuesday, July 22, 2008

tambour battant is a french breakbeat hip hop group. the have occasional forays into house and dubstep sounds. tambour battant translates into "beating drum" in french... i know because i checked with the still awesome and free babelfish translation service. anyway, it has a definite drummy sound. it sounds cheesy in a classic "positive vibes" vein, but it's good anyway. i found it browsing for dubstep on piratebay. anyway the album is "the missing link" and it's buyable.

this track features (the fun looking on his myspace page) mc jamalski of boogie down productions... yeah, that b.d.p. track's hot! jungle sounds with fun vocals...

"it's just a blip, it's just a bleep, it's just another ghetto banger in the street"

(mp3) tambour battant feat. mc jamalski - "bleep (rmx)"
from "the missing link"

i like the more aggressive track "percu'son", but i don't know enough french to see if i feel comfy posting it...

the official site. the wiki. amazing time. highly reccomended. eco tech, art, music, magic, naked hippies, all ages, great food, local tradition... everything except bumpin beats (and that probably goes down in the late night participants only part...) the local weekly was all glowing about how the fair was founded in deep counter-culture, anarchy, love and psychedelica... and how that's all so relevant, now. this is the newspaper's opinion, remember. the people there seemed even more geeked... witness:

huge drum structure... sounded great...

the general sentiment...

it was largely in shade trees packed tight...

duh, fox news lies

everyone knows fox news isn't... but these stories really amazed me. the first involves the blatant photoshopping of portraits of new york times employees. via a media matters story. more photos in that link...

the other is a little subliminal video action... not as shocking, but a good reminder of what brands they push. via haha.nu.

also today i was flipping through an old copy of project censored (in the house we are renting in beautiful hood river, oregon...) and came upon this story, "the media can legally lie" about a very curious case in which fox news tried to force reporters to broadcast lies by monsanto officials in a story on bovine growth hormone.

from the article, "Akre and Wilson sued the Fox station and on August 18, 2000, a Florida jury unanimously decided that Akre was wrongfully fired by Fox Television when she refused to broadcast (in the jury’s words) “a false, distorted or slanted story” about the widespread use of BGH in dairy cows. They further maintained that she deserved protection under Florida’s whistle blower law. Akre was awarded a $425,000 settlement. Inexplicably, however, the court decided that Steve Wilson, her partner in the case, was ruled not wronged by the same actions taken by FOX. FOX appealed the case, and on February 14, 2003 the Florida Second District Court of Appeals unanimously overturned the settlement awarded to Akre. The Court held that Akre’s threat to report the station’s actions to the FCC did not deserve protection under Florida’s whistle blower statute, because..." the rest...

some sufi surges

so i had this intuition of creating an image of a peacock on our building (no promises...), and i learned some things... first off, the peacock has two species in four varieties, the green being more intense looking in my opinion. i remembered that peacocks have symbolism within sufism. i already cannot remember the thread, but it led me to this kind looking fellow bellow, Sultan-al Awliya Shaykh Mawlana as-Sayyid Khwaja Muhammad Nazim Adil al-Haqqani al-Rabbani al-Qubrusi al-Firdausi an-Naqshbandi. he's quite old, but i had a feeling it would be good to go see him in cyprus (no promises...) all the green in this story is funny to me, because today my friend the yinsurgent's belief of having met khidr as a african muslim spouting p-funk lyrics and arabic blessings...

reader carlos posted the map above his blog. it details an early plan of a "new world order". you can click on the image above for a full resolution image. the map comes from the great site strangemaps.wordpress.com. i really enjoyed reading the site. very detailed and full of interesting analysis. and weird, weird, maps.

the map above shows the federally owned lands state by state in america, with red representing government held lands. notice how the west is largely "public" land.

i also found the article from which the map above comes from to be fascinating... an old plan to dam the mediterranean and flood the sahara... silly but, a great article.
