Hi. I used to use this blog a lot more than i do now. I don't agree with everything i've posted here, but such is the nature of time. :) My tumblr, twitter & facebook are likely to be more up to date.

shocking statistic?

about half of american doctors surveyed recently said that they regularly give their patients placebos.

article here.
wiki on placebos here.

"Half the doctors reported using placebos several times a month, nearly 70 percent of those described the treatment to their patients as "a potentially beneficial medicine not typically used for your condition." Only 5 percent of doctors explicitly called it a placebo treatment.

Most doctors used actual medicines as a placebo treatment: 41 percent used painkillers, 38 percent used vitamins, 13 percent used antibiotics, 13 percent used sedatives, 3 percent used saline injections, and 2 percent used sugar pills.

In the survey, doctors were asked if they would recommend a sugar pill for patients with chronic pain if it had been shown to be more effective than no treatment. Nearly 60 percent said they would."

i have mixed feelings about this. sometimes the patient is wrong, foolish or suggestable. in those cases the placebos may be the best thing. if you are trying to help, honesty can sometimes be a barrier. but n the other hand, i think the disconnect between doctors and their patients, and the general disregard for a patient's agency that i see in american medical practice leads me to believe the practice is surely abused.

voter suppression, voter expression

>> Friday, October 24, 2008

my main argument to vote is that already there have been major attempts to disenfranchise minority voters and young voters. so vote for obama for them, if not for yourself. denying the right to vote isn't patriotic, isn't conservative, isn't right. end of story.

for those of you shocked that i've been focused on the electoral politics, i suggest reading my initial endorsement of obama and my discussion of the relationship between my anarchist ideals and electoral politics here. the short version is "it takes an hour to vote, you stupid hipsters." that doesn't mean i find the voting climax of this video any less disappointing.

starkey

>> Wednesday, October 22, 2008

starkey. dude has a serious gift. hailing from philly, and feeling a real hip hop, grime and bassline house edge to dubstep, he's got a mix of "street bass" that earned him a spot in generation bass (chosen by vex'd... download the whole special here.)

i've always loved this remix track of his. it takes a kind of wack lupe fiasco tune and makes an epic banger out of it...

(mp3)lupe fiasco - "kick push" starkey street bass remix

his new album dropping on my birthday (november 10th) is called ephemeral exhibits. i ripped the mp3 samples off this site and compiled them into a convenient .zip file. for the record, the cd is on planet mu, one of my favorite labels....

(.zip of mp3 samples)starkey - "ephemeral exhibits"

UPDATE: hint... if you are looking for the whole album, you should peep this post...

and here's a video of starkey tearing it up at generation bass with a little interview with mary anne hobbs.

help me drive people to the polls in pennsylvania!

>> Friday, October 17, 2008

you might notice this button DOWN ANd TO THE LEFT... while i can always use money and am happy to receive donations, the reason i have it up right now is to raise money to drive people to the polls on november 4th. i live in pennsylvania (pittsburgh specifically) and it is still (despite recent trends) a swing state. since i don't own a car, i am going to rent one for $67 through zipcar (a hybrid, in fact!) please consider donating, especially if you live in somewhere obama or mccain is definitely going to win.

and don't worry, i'll move the button all the way to the bottom after the 4th... in the meantime, go download the obama rap tune on this post... GOBAMA!!!

playa del fuego report back

DJing is one of the most spectacular privileges. having a few thousand watts of sound at your disposal at a burning man event is even better. what a good time. frankly, PDF wasn't as overall beautiful as wickerman was, but great music and great people. i really love my party liberation front people and we combined camps with the philadelphia experiment people, who were quite cool, too... and plf's covered wagon dj booth (which you can see part of the inside of above) is totally, unstoppably awesome.

i spun tons of dubstep, ghettotech, grime, dancehall, tabla music, etc... some of the big hits of my sets are here:

this track crushed my dubstep finale:
(mp3)emalkay - "overflow" from boka records

this track was perfect sunshine music:
(mp3)zakir hussain - "lineage" from "zakir hussain and the rhythm experience"

this was another hot sunshine track, though i played just the part of it in dj c's mix: (mp3)m.i.a. - "paper planes (rock city obama version)" from mashit.com's awesome collection of "paper planes" remixes

and i'm embarassed to admit gucci mane's "pillz" was probably the biggest hit... but most of my pulls were a lot less offensive.

UPDATE: courtesy of (the ableton don) michael nighttime, here's an exterior shot of the covered wagon dj booth, our shade, bar and dome in the background...

this is a great example of what banksy is talking about,
but for the sake of art,
please ignore the fact that this is an ad...
